If you have already been working with a therapist, here are some things to consider:
-
The first 3 sessions are usually the most awkward. Consider sticking with them a bit longer...
-
- Early sessions typically involve a lot of question-and-answer that feel more like an interview than therapy. This is because your therapist is trying to get a holistic overview of who you are as a person, what you've experienced in life before coming to therapy, and how they may best help. This is known as a "rapport-building", "conceptualization", and "treatment planning" in therapist jargon. It may be that your therapy sessions feel more connected, helpful, and productive after this initial phase of therapy.

Most therapists are open to feedback and are able to adjust their style. Consider letting them know how you think things are going...
-
- Part of therapist's training is learning how to be open and non-defensive to feedback from their clients. You won't offend them by sharing your feedback and letting them know if you need an alternative approach. A good therapist is happy to make reasonable adjustments to their style according to what their client needs or finds most helpful.
-
You deserve to feel safe and free of judgment in therapy. And it's important that you feel confident your therapist is able to assist you with your concerns.
