Generalist therapists evaluate and treat a wide variety of presenting concerns, but may sometimes need to refer clients out for specialized care. You can read more under our Scope of Practice.

Psychologist: Psychologists have obtained a Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology and typically complete about 5K hours of clinical training before becoming a licensed by the California Board of Psychology.
LMFT: Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists have obtained a Master's degree (MA or MS) in Marriage and Family Therapy (though they are also qualified to provide individual therapy) and typically complete about 3K hours of clinical training before becoming licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
LCSW: Licensed Clinical Social Workers have obtained a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) and typically complete about 3K hours of clinical training before becoming licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Post-Doctoral Psychological Associate: Post-doctoral psychological associates have obtained a Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology. California requires an extra year of training after graduation before eligibility for licensure as a psychologist. Some of our post-doctoral psychological associates may have been practicing psychologists in other countries or states and are now pursuing licensure with the California Board of Psychology. All are under the weekly supervision of a licensed psychologist who guides their treatment plans and recommend interventions.
Pre-Doctoral Psychological Associate: Pre-doctoral psychological associates have already obtained their Master's degree and have completed all coursework for their are doctorate (PhD or PsyD) in psychology. They are completing their last year of training for the awarding of their doctorate. They are under the weekly supervision of a licensed psychologist who guides their treatment plans and recommend interventions.
AMFT: Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFT) have obtained a Master's degree (MA or MS) in Marriage and Family Therapy (though they are also qualified to provide individual therapy) and are completing their clinical training before becoming a licensed as an LMFT by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. They are under the weekly supervision of an LMFT, LCSW, or licensed psychologist who guides their treatment plans and recommend interventions.
ACSW: Associate Clinical Social Workers (ACSW) have obtained a have obtained a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) and are completing their clinical training before becoming a licensed as an LCSW by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. They are under the weekly supervision of an LMFT, LCSW, or licensed psychologist who guides their treatment plans and recommend interventions.
Practicum Counselor: Practicum Counselors are advanced students who have already obtained their Master's degree and are in the latter half of their Doctoral program. They are currently completing their clinical training in order to obtain their PhD or PsyD. They are under the weekly supervision of a licensed psychologist who guides their treatment plans and recommend interventions.
